The Tree – An Experiment in Songwriting!

This week’s track is The Tree, a songwriting experiment! The cool thing about it is the acoustic guitar and lyrics were all improvised when I first wrote this track.

The fingerpicked guitar came about when I was noodling around after a set practice. Once I had the first part down I set up my phone, pressed record on the camera and sang over that guitar pattern for 6 minutes. I had no concept in mind, no general ideas just whatever came out of my mouth at that particular second.

After that initial recording, I transcribed all the sections/arrangement as well as the lyrics and we set to work on adding parts for Kieren and messing with the vocal melodies a little.

We decided to use it for our second Stripped Back Session as the sparseness really lends itself to that format. This song is great if you’re a fan of big builds and songs that don’t kick in properly till around the 3-minute mark.

This was a completely new way of writing a song for us, but we’re pretty happy with how it turned out, surprised even!

Our New Single – Every Little Piece

May we present our fourth single – Every Little Piece.

This is a big song for a number of reasons, firstly it’s Kieren’s favourite Boxtape track, secondly while it’s new to you, we’ve been harbouring this track and letting it grow for the last year until we were finally ready to record and release it, lastly we feel like we’ve stepped things up a little with this one in terms of production, harmonies, the video, soo many things, it’s quite exciting!

It’s a beautiful drifting piece about loss, change and not knowing where you are or what you’re doing.

We sincerely hope you enjoy this track and if you have any thoughts, feelings or comments about it, please do let us know!

The track will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and many more soon – keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information! The video was shot primarily in Arundel in the south of the UK, with some footage in Amberley near a lovely country pub 🙂 The river you see is the Arun, and we rented a little motorboat to get the footage. Grabbed a tasty couple of burgers while we decided whether to brave piloting such a beast.

Win a Vibe-O-Verb Guitar Pedal!

To show our appreciation for you being a part Boxtape, we’re trying something new. We’re thinking of ways of sharing our vibe with more people, and reckon we have a common interest with you guys in cool effects pedals 🙂 So here’s our first ever effects pedal review/giveaway!

You can enter the competition by going here: http://bit.do/boxtape-pedal-compo . You can get one entry for being subscribed on YouTube and more by sharing the competition with your friends using the option at that link.

Honestly we’re only small so you’ve got a pretty good chance of winning 😉 The deadline is the end of Friday 13th October 2017 and we’ll announce on the following day.

This pedal, the Keeley Vibe-O-Verb is a modulated reverb – the wet reverb signal is subtly shifted around and you get a rich, creamy, deeply atmospheric effect. In the video we try it on clean, crunch and distorted electric guitar, and some acoustic for fun. We’re using a PRS Custom 22, Peavey Delta Blues valve amp (30w, 15″ speaker), SM58 mic and Riversong Guitar.

It’s a lovely pedal which fits well with our atmospheric soundscape approach. Good for building emotion on clean tones and filling out dreamy/indie chords!

Good luck!

Shukaku – Instrumental Riffage!

SHUKAKU is our latest gift to you, something a little heavier than usual  We just wanted to write something cool, energetic and with a little more RIFFAGE poured on. Our first video in the new ‘stripped back’ format, we recorded this last weekend with the addition of a new guitar camera mount. This track is massive fun to play.

Also, excessive use of a delay pedal was used in the making of this video….

Just Gotta Hold On…….

Introducing our dreamy/indie-pop cover of Tom Waits’ track Hold On.

Filmed on Saturday night in our sheltered little town of Horsham, West Sussex  This song (well, Tom Waits) was suggested by Anna Vïper in our recent competition, the talented artist who put together our new intro/end screen.. thanks, Anna!

We had great fun with this track, mainly how much reverb we could put on every single instrument ;D and are very happy with how it came out in such a short space of time.

If you dig it please like, share, subscribe you know the drill.

See you soon

24 Hour Linen Shop

Hello everyone,

We set up the camera last weekend and got this track down for a live performance. We’re treating this as our Season 1 Finale (more to come about that) and would love for you to have a listen!

This track is an acoustic grungey earworm, an original by us and inspired by a haberdashery shop we walked past that was open late. We really loved putting the production together for this one, especially that epic chorus with the harmonies!

We’re now up to 30+ videos over on our channel http://youtube.com/boxtaperocksyou so if you’re not subscribed please head over there to find more

Thank you for your support

Andrew Huang Competition Entry

Evening all! .. AAH it’s finally done! 3 weeks in the making!

This is our entry for Andrew Huang’s cover competition which was sponsored by Yousician. It’s the secret project we’ve been working on for the last few weeks, and boy have we worked on it! Very excited to share it – it’s been a lot of work and is entirely unlike anything we’ve done before as Boxtape. Our first track with *piano*, our first track with *drums*, or with *synth bass*! If there’s a challenge, you better believe we’ll rise to it.

The song we chose to cover is called All Those Love Songs, They Were All True. The journey for this track started on Ukelele, and after some serious pondering progressed to the piano with an acoustic guitar. Then we got excited, things got out of hand, and the second half of the track came together

New stuff we’ve now done by taking this challenge – getting under the skin of some fancier chords; writing and recording drum patterns on a keyboard; some fancy vocal effect ideas; a 3-part harmony (K’s still improving and learning to sing!); learning more about multi-band compression and probably collecting and sifting through more video footage than we’ve recorded for any past video. Totally worth it!

If we were lucky enough to succeed in the competition, we’d like to do a new version of the track/video, bigger and better, with a certain OP-1 placeholder replaced with the real deal.

If you are reading this and are not Andrew Huang, you should really, really check out his channel, subscribe, sit down for a few hours and see what you’re missing. – https://www.youtube.com/user/songstowearpantsto

Original arrangement and lyrics by Andrew Huang – everything else entirely written, recorded, mixed edited and produced by us. Boxtape is filmed in front of a live studio cat.

A quick reminder, it really, really helps us out if you subscribe to our YouTube channel and/or like the video. It helps us get recommended to other people who we’d like to welcome into our audience! – http://youtube.com/boxtaperocksyou

Have a great weekend.

Ukuleles Rule The World

Good Evening,

Unfortunately, we’ve limited time this week due to working on our entry for Andrew Huang’s competition. We pushed the “EPIC” button on that track and even with a week left it is going to be tight!

So, inspired by seeing Amanda Palmer live last week we decided to do a cover of one of our favourite songs of hers, Ukulele Anthem. This is purely just a bit of fun and hopefully, will brighten up your evening/day/mood/life

If you don’t know who AP is google her now, you will not be disappointed!

Much love

A Song About Virginia Woolf

Kat likes to write about things she likes, and one of those things is Virginia Woolf! Ever since reading “Orlando” she’s been a little bit obsessed and that eventually gave birth to this track.

Fun fact! This is the third version of this song  Originally it was a musical challenge to write a 3 chord punk song. Then it became a fast, furious and heavy, metal track with our previous band; and now it’s become this chilled acoustic summer track. It’s amazing how you can re-invent things.

This track always goes down well live and has a proper singalong chorus, which is unusual for us

We hope you enjoy it and if you do like Virginia Woolf let us know why in the comments!
