Why am I a musician? It's an interesting question. For me it was always an escape, a way to create another world, a way to speak those words I couldn't possibly say. It's my communication with the outside world. Instruments and vocals are the tools I use and while I learnt music on piano and played bass for many years and have sung for all of them I'm not sure I would definitely call myself a pianist, bassist or vocalist as if that defines me. I'm a songwriter a storyteller at heart.

Everyone needs a genre right? Is it metal, Indie or Jazz? Well So far I've written in EDM, Metal & Prog (my first band hAND), Indie  / Acoustic (Early Boxtape) and some classical (Solo) and to be honest I found it incredibly hard to stick to the outlines of what each of those genres are because of the song. It's always the song that comes first, the story, the intent, the emotion to convey and I find my image of what that needs to be for each individual song, doesn't fit neatly in genre boxes. For many years I felt this was a complete failing on my part, that I can't make my  "sound" or be consistent. As I continue to write 15+ years on I'm starting to wonder if my "sound" is the genre mashing and unpredictability I've had all along, is that what I should be celebrating instead of trying to get rid of it? Who knows, but we're here to give it a shot.

More recently I've gotten into academia, somehow finding myself studying a masters degree in Innovation & Business in the music industry. Laughable as I'd never written a proper essay in my life before that. I now teach this at BA level and am helping to coach the next generation of musicians. That sounds like I'm ancient, I'm not, I just wanted a catchy sentence.

Music wise we strive on, creating and creating and maybe something will stick, that track about climate change and aliens? Or maybe the one about bubble tea and death? I can only write what's in my head and those are the types of things that are in my head, so if you have those types of things in your head you might like my music.
